Genoa is one of the busiest cruise ports in the Mediterranean (homeport for MSC and Costa). Thousands of passengers disembark here every day with only 6–8 hours to see the city.
This guide is designed to maximize your limited time without the stress of missing your ship's departure.
Where to Find the HOHO Bus at the Port
This is the easiest part. The City Sightseeing buses are parked right outside the terminal exit.
- For MSC/Costa Passengers: As you exit the Stazione Marittima, you will likely see the red double-decker buses lined up.
- Ticket Sellers: There are usually staff in red jackets selling tickets on the pier, but buying online in advance saves you from queuing up in the sun.
The "Safe Bet" 5-Hour Itinerary
Many cruisers try to rush to Portofino or Cinque Terre by train.
- Warning: Italian trains can be delayed or hit by strikes. If you miss the ship, it's a disaster.
- Smart Choice: Stay in Genoa. It’s safer, stress-free, and incredibly beautiful.
Detailed Plan:
- 10:00 AM - Start: Board the bus at the Cruise Terminal (Stop 1 or nearby). Grab a top-deck seat for the views.
- 10:30 AM - Hop Off at Piazza De Ferrari (Stop 3): This is the center. Take a photo at the fountain.
- 11:00 AM - The Historic Walk: Walk down the grand Via San Lorenzo towards the sea. Stop inside the Cathedral (free) to see the black and white marble interior.
- 12:00 PM - Lunch Break: You are now in the Old Port area. Grab a cone of fried calamari or a slice of focaccia. Do not sit for a long 2-hour Italian lunch!
- 01:00 PM - Scenic Ride: Hop back on the bus at the Aquarium stop (Stop 1 is nearby). Stay on the bus! Ride the Red Line all the way along the coast to Boccadasse.
- 02:00 PM - The Coast: Enjoy the sea breeze as the bus drives along Corso Italia. You can hop off at Boccadasse for a quick gelato if you have time, or just enjoy the loop.
- 03:00 PM - Return: The bus will bring you back to the Aquarium/Old Port area. From here, it’s a 15-minute flat walk back to your cruise ship along the quay.
Why Choose the Bus?
- Reliability: The buses run on a continuous loop every 20-30 minutes.
- Proximity: You are never more than 15 minutes away from the port by taxi if an emergency happens.
