The large bronze fountain in Piazza De Ferrari spraying water high in the air

You cannot miss this square. Dominated by a massive circular fountain that shoots water high into the air, Piazza De Ferrari is the beating heart of Genoa. It is the hinge that connects the ancient medieval city with the modern 19th-century expansion.

This is the most central stop on the bus route. From here, you can walk to almost any major attraction in 10 minutes.

The Iconic Fountain

The fountain is the meeting point for every Genoese.

  • Tip: On special occasions (national holidays, awareness days), the fountain is lit up in different colors at night. It’s a spectacular photo op.

Surrounding Landmarks

As you stand by the fountain, turn 360 degrees to see a masterclass in architecture:

  1. Palazzo Ducale (Doge's Palace): Once the seat of power where the Doge ruled the Republic of Genoa. Today, it’s a vibrant cultural center hosting major art exhibitions (Monet, Van Gogh, etc.). Walk through its courtyards for free to admire the columns and statues.
  2. Teatro Carlo Felice: The Opera House. It has a unique history: bombed during WWII, it was rebuilt with a modern interior but kept the original neoclassical columns on the exterior.
  3. The Stock Exchange (Palazzo della Borsa): A stunning example of Liberty (Art Nouveau) style. The curved facade and elaborate decorations scream wealth and power from the early 1900s.

Where to Go from Here

  • For Shopping: Walk down Via XX Settembre. This wide avenue is lined with high-street shops (Zara, H&M), but look down! The sidewalks are paved with beautiful black and white mosaics. Look up! The buildings have massive sculpted giants holding up the balconies.
  • For Luxury: Walk up Via Roma for high-end fashion (Gucci, Louis Vuitton) and the elegant Galleria Mazzini, a glass-covered arcade inspired by Paris.
  • For History: Walk west down Via San Lorenzo to reach the Cathedral and the Old Port.

A Coffee Break

Piazza De Ferrari is surrounded by historic cafes.

  • Caffe Douce: Located right on the square (next to the Ducale), perfect for a high-quality pastry and people watching.
  • Mangini: A historic cafe where editors and intellectuals used to meet, retaining its old-world charm.
