The colorful houses of Boccadasse seen from the sea

Imagine the colorful villages of the Cinque Terre, but without the train journey. That is Boccadasse. Often featured on the cover of guidebooks, this ancient fishing hamlet was once separate from the city. As Genoa expanded, it swallowed the village, yet Boccadasse remained miraculously unchanged.

The pastel-colored houses tumble down to a small pebble beach, wooden fishing boats are pulled up on the shore, and the smell of salt and fried fish fills the air. It is the most romantic spot in Genoa.

getting There with the HOHO Bus

This stop is a highlight of the Red Line.

  • The Ride: The bus drives along Corso Italia, a 2.5km seaside promenade. Sit on the right side of the bus for sea views.
  • The Stop: Get off at the "Boccadasse" stop.
  • Access: From the main road, you must walk down a short but steep lane (Via Aurora) to reach the sea level.

What to Do in Boccadasse

The beauty of this place is that there isn't much to "do" except enjoy life.

1. The Beach Experience

The small bay has a pebble beach freely accessible to everyone. On sunny days (even in winter!), you will find locals sunbathing on the rocks.

  • Tip: It’s not a "sand castle" beach. It’s a "sit on a rock and watch the waves" beach.

2. The Gelato Ritual

It is a local rite of passage to buy a cone and eat it sitting on the beach.

  • Where to go: Antica Gelateria Amedeo is an institution here. Their Panera (a local coffee semifreddo) is legendary.

3. Aperitivo with a View

As the sun sets, the little bars facing the bay fill up. Grab a Spritz or a glass of local white wine (Vermentino) and watch the sky turn pink.

4. Photography

  • The Classic Shot: Climb the rocks on the right side of the bay for the best angle of the colorful houses.
  • The Panorama: Walk up the stairs to the Church of Sant'Antonio for a view down onto the village and out to the promontory of Portofino in the distance.

Where to Eat

Besides gelato, Boccadasse is famous for street food.

  • Fried Fish: Look for the small windows selling paper cones (cuoppo) filled with fried anchovies and squid.
  • Focaccia al Formaggio: Several bakeries here serve the gooey, cheese-filled focaccia typical of Recco.

Best Time to Visit

Late afternoon/Sunset. The west-facing position means the village is bathed in golden light at the end of the day, making the red and yellow facades glow.
