The Bigo panoramic lift rising above the Old Port of Genoa

Stop #1 on the map, and number one in visitors' hearts. The Porto Antico (Old Port) is a masterclass in urban regeneration, transformed by world-renowned architect Renzo Piano for the 1992 Expo.

This isn't just a place to visit; it’s the vibrant heart of modern Genoa. From the depths of the ocean to panoramic heights, here’s your complete guide to maximizing your time at the Old Port.

Quick Facts

  • HOHO Bus Stop: Stop #1 (Start of the Red & Blue Lines)
  • Best Time to Visit: Morning (right when it opens) or late afternoon.
  • Accessibility: Fully accessible for strollers and wheelchairs.
  • Highlight: The Acquario di Genova (Europe's largest).

1. Acquario di Genova: The Main Attraction

Designed by Renzo Piano, this massive structure stretches into the sea like a ship ready to launch. It’s the largest aquarium in Italy and one of the most important in Europe.

What You'll See

  • Shark Bay: A massive tank hosting grey reef sharks, nurse sharks, and zebra sharks.
  • The Cetacean Pavilion: A two-level structure where you can watch dolphins play from above and observe their underwater grace from below.
  • The Manatee Tank: Meet the gentle "sea cows," an endangered species that inspired mermaid legends.
  • Antarctic Zone: Watch Gentoo and Magellanic penguins clumsy on land but torpedo-fast underwater.

Practical Tips

  • Duration: Allow at least 2.5 to 3 hours.
  • Tickets: Lines can be hours long. Buying online in advance is essential.
  • Feeding Times: Check the schedule upon arrival; watching the dolphins or sharks being fed is a highlight.

2. The Bigo: A Bird's Eye View

Also designed by Renzo Piano, the Bigo looks like an old cargo crane loading a ship. It’s actually a panoramic lift.

  • The Experience: The cabin rotates 360° as it rises 40 meters (130 feet) into the air.
  • The View: You get the best possible view of the intricate layers of Genoa: the slate roofs of the old town, the modern port, and the hills crowned with fortresses behind the city.
  • Audio Guide: As you ascend, an audio guide explains the history of the buildings you are seeing.

3. The Biosfera: A Tropical Bubble

Next to the Aquarium floats a glass sphere called the Biosfera (another Piano creation). Inside is a living tropical rainforest.

  • Climate: It’s hot and humid inside!
  • Wildlife: Look for scarlet ibises, exotic butterflies, and even iguanas roaming freely among ferns and orchids.
  • Visit Time: It’s small—you can see it thoroughly in 15–20 minutes. It makes for a perfect quick add-on to the Aquarium.

Hidden Gems in the Port

While the "Big Three" get the attention, don't miss these:

Galata Museo del Mare

A 5-minute walk along the quay from the Aquarium. This is the largest maritime museum in the Mediterranean.

  • Why Go? It’s incredibly interactive. You can experience a storm in 4D, explore the history of transatlantic migration (where you "become" an Italian emigrant boarding a ship to America), and even board the Nazario Sauro submarine docked outside.

Citta dei Bambini e dei Ragazzi

Under the Aquarium building is a massive "experience museum" dedicated to the 5 senses, designed specifically for children and teenagers. If it’s raining, this is a lifesaver for parents.

Eataly Genoa

Located on the top floor of the Millo building.

  • The Secret: Take the glass elevator up to the restaurant. You’ll get a stunning view of the harbor—comparable to the Bigo, but free (specifically if you buy a coffee or focaccia!).

Where to Eat

The Porto Antico is packed with restaurants, but some are tourist traps.

  • Eataly: Reliable quality, great views, slightly higher prices.
  • I Tre Merli: Good Genovese cuisine right on the water.
  • Street Food: There are several excellent focaccerie in the alleyways (caruggi) just across the street from the port. Grab a slice and eat it sitting on a bench watching the boats.

Connecting to the City

From Porto Antico, you are just steps away from the dark, atmospheric alleyways of the medieval center. Cross the street (Via Gramsci) and you enter the Caruggi. It's a sharp contrast: bright, open sea views vs. narrow, historic lanes. It is the perfect place to start your walking tour of the old town.
