Spianata Castelletto - The Best Panoramic View in Genoa

Genoa is a vertical city, squeezed between the mountains and the sea. Because of this, elevators and funiculars are considered public transport here, just like buses. The most famous of them all leads to Spianata Castelletto, a 360° balcony suspended over the historic center.

The poet Giorgio Caproni famously described this elevator as the "way to heaven." When the doors open at the top, you’ll understand why.

Reaching "Heaven" from the HOHO Bus

The HOHO bus (Red Line) stops at Piazza Portello.

1. Find the Entrance: Look for the tiled tunnel entrance on the mountain side of the square. It looks like a subway station but leads to an elevator.
2. The Liberty Lift: You will take the Ascensore Castelletto Levante. This is an Art Nouveau (Liberty style) gem with wooden cabins and stained glass.
   • Note: It is part of the local AMT network. It is often free for tourists, but check the signs at the entrance. If not, a ticket is very cheap (~€1.50).

The View: Understanding Genoa

From Spianata Castelletto, the chaotic map of Genoa finally makes sense. You are looking down onto a sea of slate-grey rooftops.

• The Details: Spot the medieval towers (Torre degli Embriaci), the Romanesque bell towers, and the modern skyscrapers of the business district.
• The Port: Watch the giant cruise ships and ferries maneuver in the harbor.
• The Lanterna: In the distance to the west, you can see the city's iconic lighthouse standing guard.

The Perfect Pause

This isn't just a viewpoint; it's a living room for the locals. You will see grandpas reading newspapers and couples on benches.

• A Sweet Tradition: You must stop at Don Paolo. This historic kiosk is famous for its sicilian-style granita (slush) with whipped cream and brioche. It is widely considered the best in the city. Alternatively, try Bar Guarino for an aperitivo with a view.
