Genoa boasts the largest medieval historic center in Europe. Locally known as the Caruggi, this labyrinth of narrow alleyways is a UNESCO World Heritage site and the soul of the city.

The HOHO bus cannot enter these streets—they are often too narrow for even a small car, let alone a bus! Instead, use the bus stops as "gates" to enter this fascinating world on foot.

What Are the Caruggi?

The word caruggio refers to the typical narrow streets of the Ligurian riviera. In Genoa, they form a dense web where the sun barely touches the ground floor.

  • Atmosphere: It’s a sensory overload. You’ll smell fresh pesto and baking focaccia mixed with the salty sea air.
  • Architecture: Look up! While the street level might be dark, the buildings soar 6 or 7 stories high, often painted in pastel colors or decorated with slate friezes.

Best Entry Points from the HOHO Bus

Navigate the maze by starting from these keys stops:

1. The Aristocratic Entry (Stop: Piazza De Ferrari)

  • Route: Walk down Via San Lorenzo.
  • Vibe: Wide, safe, and tourist-friendly.
  • What you see: The grand Cathedral, huge gelaterias, and souvenir shops. This is the main artery connecting the modern center to the port.

2. The Port Entry (Stop: Porto Antico / Aquarium)

  • Route: Cross into Sottoripa.
  • Vibe: Chaotic, loud, and historic.
  • What you see: Italy's oldest public arcades. Under these arches, you’ll find ancient friggitorie (fry shops) selling calamari and chickpea tarts (farinata).

Must-See Sights Inside the Maze

San Lorenzo Cathedral

A masterpiece of Gothic architecture with its zebra-striped black and white marble facade.

  • Don't Miss: Inside, on the right aisle, look for the unexploded WWII bomb shell that pierced the roof but failed to detonate. The locals say the city was protected by San Giovanni (St. John).

Via del Campo

Made famous by the singer-songwriter Fabrizio De André, this street is a pilgrimage site for Italian music lovers. It retains a gritty, authentic charm.

Piazza delle Erbe & San Donato

A perfect pocket of peace. Visit the Romanesque church of San Donato with its octagonal tower, then grab an aperitivo in Piazza delle Erbe, which comes alive with students and locals in the evening.

Practical Tips for the Caruggi

  • Navigation: Mobile GPS can be spotty due to the tall buildings. Look for signs pointing to "Porto Antico" (downhill) or "De Ferrari" (uphill) to reorient yourself.
  • Safety: The area has cleaned up significantly, but it is still a port city center.
    • Stick to busy streets like Via San Lorenzo and Via Canneto il Curto.
    • Avoid the very narrow, unlit side alleys late at night.
    • Be aware of pickpockets in crowded spots.
  • Food: This is the best place to eat cheap. Buy focaccia by the weight at any bakery (panificio) or try Gran Ristoro for incredible sandwiches.
