Step off the bus at Caricamento and turn your back to the sea. Those dark arches? That is Sottoripa.

1135 AD

Begun in 1135, it is the oldest public portico in Italy. It was the waterfront bazaar where Marco Polo walked.

Smells and Tastes

It is a sensory overload.

  • Friggitorie: Carega is legendary for fried squid in paper cones.
  • Gran Ristoro: A tiny sandwich shop with endless lines.
  • Spices: Exotic spice shops that have been there for generations. It is chaotic, multicultural, and unmistakably Genoese.
